Geography
Southern Perth. Thornlie covers the suburbs of Thornlie, Orange Grove, Martin and part of Gosnells and Kenwick. The entire seat lies in Gosnells council area.

Redistribution
Thornlie shifted east, gaining Martin and part of Orange Grove from Kalamunda, and gained the remainder of Orange Grove and part of Kenwick from Forrestfield. Thornlie lost a small area to Cannington.

History
Thornlie was created in its current form in 2017, and primarily replaced Gosnells, which was created in 2008. The seat name was previously used from 1977 to 1989. The seat has always been won by Labor.

Gosnells was created with a notional 11.4% margin for the ALP, which was cut to 5.5% at the 2008 election, when the seat was won by Labor candidate Chris Tallentire.

Tallentire won a second term in 2013 with a 2.9% margin, and then a third and fourth term in 2017 and 2021 with increasingly large margins.

Assessment
Thornlie is a very safe Labor seat.

  1. Looks like Labor’s candidate Daniel Morrison Bird has withdrawn from the race. Strange, considering Thornlie was pretty a 100% sure to be a Labor retain.

  2. Very strange – Colleen Egan is the frontrunner for ALP preselection and thus being the next MP for Thornlie
