Yan Yean – Victoria 2010

ALP 7.9%

Incumbent MP
Danielle Green, since 2002.

Geography
Northern fringe of Melbourne. Yan Yean covers most of Nillumbik and Whittlesea council areas.

History
Yan Yean was first created in 1992, and has always been held by the ALP.

The seat was first won in 1992 by Andre Haermeyer. He held the seat at the 1996 and 1999 elections, before moving to the safer seat of Kororoit in 2002. He resigned from Parliament in 2008.

In 2002, a redistribution made Yan Yean a notionally Liberal seat, and the ALP preselected Danielle Green, who managed to hold on to the seat. She was re-elected in 2006.

  1. Danielle Green started as a member of Theo Theophanous’ left subfaction (along with her then partner Michael Rizzo who wrote an interesting La Trobe MA on the left and the Accord) but followed Theo to the right.

  2. Pinched from Antony:

The electorate has the state’s highest electoral enrolment, more than 53,000. This is nearly a third over quota and up more than 30% since the 2006 election. Enrolment has risen more than 50% since the electorate was first contested in 2002.

This’ll probably be where they start chopping for the redistribution, then. If it’s been growing at that rate and continues to, it might even get split into two new electorates.

  3. Danielle Green has lodged a complaint against the Liberal candidate, accusing him of ‘deceptive and misleading conduct’ over apparently unconfirmed and uncosted promises.

As someone who likes quirky campaign stories, I’ve got to say this is amongst the strangest I’ve ever seen.

  4. Hmmm, it looks like a rather tragic attempt to deflect attention from the Bracks/Brumby government’s own backflipping and delays over the railway extension. Promised in 1999, it’s been put off and “recosted” over and over, and is only now getting under way a decade late.

I’m guessing the race must be tight, since candidates who are well ahead tend to keep their head down and give their opponents nothing.

  5. Candidates in ballot paper order are:

    Patrick Shea – DLP
    Jack Gange – Liberal
    Andrew McPherson – Family First
    Danielle Green – Labor
    Karin Geradts – Greens
