Kororoit – Victoria 2010

ALP 25.6%

Incumbent MP
Marlene Kairouz, since 2008.

Geography
Western Melbourne. Kororoit covers central parts of the City of Brimbank, and a largely unpopulated southeastern corner of Melton Shire. Kororoit covers the suburbs of Albanvale, Caroline Springs, Kings Park and parts of Deer Park, Rockbank, St Albans and Truganina.

History
Kororoit was first created as an electoral district at the 2002 state election. At both elections, and at the 2008 by-election, it has been won by the ALP.

Kororoit was won in 2002 by Andre Haermeyer. He had previously won the newly-created marginal seat of Yan Yean in 1992. Haermeyer joined the Labor frontbench in 1996, and when Labor won government in 1999 he became Police Minister. He moved from Yan Yean to the much safer seat of Kororoit in 2002. Haermeyer moved to a new portfolio in 2005, and he moved to the backbench after the 2006 election.

Haermeyer resigned from Parliament in June 2008. The following by-election was won by AWU official Marlene Kairouz.

Candidates

Political situation
Kororoit is still a reasonably secure Labor seat, although a strong campaign from Les Twentyman could make it difficult for the ALP.

  1. I wonder if the high primary vote for FF was because it topped the ballot paper and maybe reflected that high number of donkey voting?

  2. Candidates in ballot paper order:

    Goran Kesic – Liberal
    Anastasia Smietanka – Greens
    Marlene Kairouz – Labor
    Kathy Majdlik –
    Glenn Rozec – Family First
