History
Kilsyth was created at the 2002 election. The seat was considered relatively safe for the Liberal Party, and was contested by sitting Liberal member for the abolished seat of Mooroolbark, Lorraine Elliott. In an upset result, Labor candidate Dympna Beard won the seat with a massive swing.
In 2006, Beard’s 2.1% margin was overturned by the Liberal Party’s David Hodgett, who won the seat with a margin of 245 votes.

Labor has an interesting candidate in Vicki Setches, She won Australias first US style primary a few months back against a well financed , highly credentialed ,local govt. type . Her strength being she is a very local candidate. grew up in Sth Croydon, schooled locally , married, and bought up her children in the area and been a participant in many local community groups covering Parent involvement, sporting clubs , and local enviro protection .As well she has a small family business background & worked locally in Retail sales & management. She currently works for Shaun Leane labors upper house member for Eastern Melb. where her role is to work with local groups , which from reports she does very successfuly.
Is she related to Kay Setches, who held the former nearby state seat of Ringwood? It would bring a bit of cynicism into the whole “primary style” pre-selection if the winner was a party insider.
Turnout in the primary was very low looks like candidates mobilized their social network and Setches’ name recognition would have been a big help here.
Candidates in ballot paper order are:
Shane McKenzie –
Sam Haughton-Greene – Sex Party
Justin-Paul Sammons – Greens
David Hodgett – Liberal
Reinhard Dexter – DLP
Daniel Harrison – Family First
Vicki Setches – Labor
For newcomers I think it’s worth an acknowledgment that Justin-Paul is a past contributor of guest posts to this blog during the 2009 European elections.
