Geography
North-western Tasmania. Montgomery covers most of Burnie and Kentish council areas and all of the Central Coast council area, running along the coast from Burnie to Ulverstone.
Redistribution
Montgomery lost part of the town of Burnie to Murchison, and gained areas on its eastern edge from Mersey and Western Tiers.
History
Montgomery was created in the 1999 redistribution. The seat was held by Sue Smith, who had previously held the seat of Leven since the 1997 by-election.
Smith was re-elected in Montgomery in 2002 with 51.7% of the vote in a four-candidate race. She was re-elected in 2007 unopposed.
Smith was elected President of the Legislative Council in 2008. She served as President for the next five years, and retired at the 2013 election.
Smith was succeeded by Liberal candidate Leonie Hiscutt at the 2013 election.

Assessment
This is the first time Labor is contesting this race, although independent Cheryl Fuller, who was Hiscutt’s main opponent in 2013 and has since served as a staff member to Jacqui Lambie, will also be contesting, and it’s not clear which of these challengers will be the biggest threat to Hiscutt.

Booth breakdown
Polling places in Montgomery have been split into three parts. Polling places in the Burnie and Ulverstone areas have been grouped together, with the remaining rural booths also grouped together.
Liberal candidate Leonie Hiscutt won the highest primary vote in all three areas, ranging from 41.8% in Ulverstone to 50.6% in the rural parts.
Runner-up Cheryl Fuller had a vote ranging from 24% in Burnie to almost 34% in Ulverstone.
