NSW by-elections, 2016

There will be three NSW state by-elections on November 12.

Canterbury

The Canterbury by-election was triggered by Linda Burney’s resignation from state parliament to run (successfully) for the federal seat of Barton. Canterbury is a safe Labor seat and the party shouldn’t have any trouble retaining the seat.

Orange

The Orange by-election was triggered by Andrew Gee’s resignation from state parliament to run (successfully) for the federal seat of Calare. Orange is held by the Nationals, but dropping support for the Coalition state government means that Labor has ambitions to gain the seat.

Wollongong

The state seat of Wollongong has long been dominated by Labor, but independent candidate Gordon Bradbery came close to defeating Labor’s Noreen Hay in 2011. Bradbery went on to win election as lord mayor of Wollongong in 2012. Hay resigned from her seat in August 2016, and Bradbery is again contesting the seat, with a real chance of ending Labor’s control of this seat.
