History
The seat of Wagga Wagga was first created in 1894. With the exception of the period 1904-1913 and 1920-1927, the seat has existed ever since. The seat has been held by the Liberal Party since 1957.
The seat was held by the Country Party from 1927 to 1941, when it was won by the ALP’s Eddie Graham. He served as a minister from 1944 until his death in 1957.
The Liberal Party’s Wal Fife won the 1957 by-election. He served as a minister from 1967 until 1975, when he resigned from Wagga Wagga to contest the federal seat of Farrer. He served as a federal minister from 1977 to 1983. He moved to the seat of Hume in 1984, and held the seat until his retirement in 1993.
The 1975 Wagga Wagga by-election was won by Joe Schipp. He served as a minister in the Coalition government from 1988 to 1993, and retired in 1999.
Wagga Wagga has been held since 1999 by Liberal MP Daryl Maguire.

Independent candidate Dr Joe McGirr has launched his own iPhone app.
Maguire won in 1999 with only 25% of the primary vote. Votes were scattered widely with Labor on 26%, the Nationals 23%, and sizable votes for an Independent and One Nation.
My prediction: Liberal retain, 5-10% swing.
Labor might really feel the pain Dr Joe McGirr is definitely striking accord with some locals. Campaigning on television is ONLY coming from Dr Joe McGirr and Daryl Maguire nothing from Labor at all. Very disappointing.
I am visiting from Lithgow and even though this is a safe Liberal seat, Labor is not putting up much of a fight….
Drass
Really, the only interest in this electorate is how close the Liberals will get to 100% of the 2PP vote
dovif,
I think Labor might finish 3rd not 2nd should have clarified sorry
Maguire to win, McGirr to finish second.
Because only Labor and the Greens stood against the Liberals here in 2007, you can expect the primary vote of all sides to drop. But I can’t imagine the drop being big enough to unseat Maguire.
an upset? ind win
Apparently Joe McGirr has a website at http://www.joemcgirr.com.au however I can’t get it to load.
In the leaders debate televised by Prime across regional NSW tonight, O’Farrell mentioned Wagga in the same breath as Dubbo, Tamworth and Port Macquarie, in a way which I took to imply that he was singling out Wagga for the kind of special mention you give to a key seat, suggesting the Libs feel they might be in trouble here. Interesting.
