ALP 22.6%
Incumbent MP
Julia Irwin, since 1998.
Geography
South-western Sydney, in particular parts of Liverpool and Fairfield council areas. Includes parts of the Liverpool CBD and the suburbs of Cabramatta, Canley Vale, Lansvale, Mount Pritchard, Bonnyrigg, Ashcroft, Busby, Hinchinbrook, Cecil Hills and Green Valley.
Redistribution
Fowler lost semi-rural areas at the western end of the former seat, including Warragamba, Luddenham, Bringelly, Rossmore and Austral, with these areas transferred to Macarthur and Werriwa. Fowler also lost parts of Fairfield north of Cecil Hills to McMahon. In exchange, the suburbs of Cabramatta, Canley Vale and Lansvale were transferred from Blaxland to Fowler.
History
Fowler was first created for the 1984 election as part of the expansion of the size of the House of Representatives. It is a very safe Labor seat and has always been Labor-held.
The seat was first won in 1984 by the ALP’s Ted Grace. Grace held the seat for fourteen years, retiring in 1998. He was succeeded by Julia Irwin, also from the ALP. Irwin has held the seat ever since, playing a role as a backbencher who has often created controversy without advancing far in federal politics.
Candidates
- Mike Head (Socialist Equality Party)
- Thomas Dang (Liberal)
- Chris Hayes (Labor)
- Signe Westerberg (Greens)
Political situation
This seat is incredibly safe for the ALP and Hayes should have no trouble retaining it.

Booth breakdown
Fowler is made up of parts of Liverpool council and Fairfield council. A majority of the seat is in Fairfield council, so I’ve divided booths in Fairfield into two areas: those in the Cabramatta-Lansvale area and those around Mount Pritchard and Bonnyrigg. Booths in Liverpool are treated as one group.
The ALP won massive majorities in all areas, although their strongest result was around Cabramatta, where they polled 78%. They managed over 70% in the other areas. The ALP won every single booth in Fowler.
Voter group | GRN % | ALP 2CP % | Total votes | % of ordinary votes |
Liverpool | 4.77 | 71.96 | 25,176 | 37.53 |
Bonnyrigg-Mount Pritchard | 5.31 | 73.49 | 23,274 | 34.70 |
Cabramatta-Lansvale | 7.71 | 78.43 | 18,626 | 27.77 |
Other votes | 7.17 | 65.64 | 11,645 |
Grace defeated Maureen Horder for preselection back in 1984, she was a former Labor leader in the old pre-self govt ACT assembly and she would have been a better MP:

Thomas Dang has been endorsed as the Liberal candidate for Fowler
My prediction: Labor retain, 3% swing to Liberals.
My prediction: Labor retain, no real swing to the Liberals. If there is any swing it is likely to be around 0.7%.
THANKYOU !!
To all my friends, family, volunteers, supporters & the Liberal Party.
Your hard work, determination & efforts has achieved the biggest swing in history for Fowler . Together we achieved the biggest swing towards the Liberals in the state.
While the national result is to be determined. It is clear that Fowler has given us a strong base to work from. A strong base to advocate for the needs of the community, a strong base to keep Labor honest & a strong base to end Labor neglect.
Fowler has given us a chance to demonstrate what Liberals can achieve for the community. Lets honor this swing by continuing our work for a better Fowler.
Your help, support and encouragement during this journey has reminded in me my belief in the potential of the individual. Together we have shown Australia that we are not to be taken for granted any more.
A very big THANK YOU to you all.
Negligible Greens swing in Fowler. Until the Greens expand their NESB (Non-English Speaking Background) base, it’s unlikely a significant vote will be achieved here.
There was a huge swing to Thomas: +14%. I’m sure he was somewhat assisted by no right-wing minor parties running here, and negligible Labor presence. A good go nonetheless, Mr Dang 🙂
